Toon n' Out

Well, the FA Vase dream is over for this season, but it's been a great adventure for Tipton Town FC. The replay on Sat (19th Feb) saw the game end 1-1 after extra time and go to penalties, this resulted in Tipton playing the part of the England team - and losing out. Still, a great crowd turned up - 665 the official crowd - Tiptons biggest ever.

The lads are still top of the league and must now go on and claim the title they so disappointingly missed out on last season. All the best to Jarrow and good luck to Stourbridge who are still in the competition and face favourites Sudbury away in the next round. C'mon The Toon' (Tipton Town that is). Message from Gary O'Dea

The Peoples Republic of Tipton's football team - Tipton Town FC did the town proud on Saturday 12th Feb with a well earned 1-1 draw in the 5th round of the FA Vase competition against Jarrow & Bolden Roofing in a wind swept North East. It's a bit of football history for Tipton to progress so far in this competition.

The travelling army of fans from the Peoples Republic were in fine voice - coaches and cars travelling up on Friday and Saturday for the game - I travelled Saturday on a coach from the football club - still bleary eyed from The Lamp gig the night before. Here's a link to the match report from Pyramid Footballs web site:- Jarrow Roofing v Tipton Town Match Report

The replay is this Saturday (19th Feb) at Tipton Town FC - 2-45pm kick-off. The Baggies haven't got a game so all Albion fans 'come on down' - as for Wolves fans - well stop wasting your money at the Molineux and get down to the Toon'. C'mon Tipun'.

Opening 'Alternative Black Country Night Out' show...rip roaring success

The first night of the 'Alternative Black Country Night Out' show at The Lamp Tavern in Dudley (Fri 11th Feb) was an absolute stormer. The sell out show to a packed audience went down a treat. The mixture of music, poetry and literature offerings from local acts were given a seal of approval by the enthusiastic local crowd.

The literature acts - Paul McDonald and Greg Stokes were in fine form reading from their published material and received great support from the crowd. The poetry sessions from Brendan Hawthorne and Brian Dakin were stunning - proving that contemporary poets in our region can be every bit as passionate / articulate and thought provoking as any trendy / arty' rock n' roll poet that the London Arts scene has to offer.

Rachel Mainstone played a wonderful solo acoustic spot that brought the house down and me and Gazz Oliver ripped through a 'no nonsense acoustic set' at the end of the night to send the bleary eyed / merry Bathams beer filled punters on their way (once they'd let us off stage).

We would like to thank you all for your support. Tickets are now on sale for the second show on Fri 4th March - and are going fast. For information on the second show see below:-

Best Regards

Gary O'Dea

Gary O'Dea respects to Dave Goodman...R.I.P - God Bless Doctor Dave

Some sad news I've received from my old mate Gary Lammin over the weekend is that Dave Goodman the record producer that we had the pleasure of working with during the recording of the Zen Buddah' Boot Boys album 'Icons' in 2000 has very sadly died of a heart attack in Malta on Thursday 10th Feb.

The legendary London record producer was a lovely guy. He came to prominence with his work with The Sex Pistols (no less) early recording sessions in 1976 / 77...his status continuing on their 'Great Rock N' Roll Swindle' album and also the legendary 'Spunk' Bootleg tapes.

He was the sound engineer on the Anarchy In The UK Tour and also Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers road manager during this period. Dave Goodman took part in what was to be the last broadcast of my radio show ' The Secret Public Cafe Show' from WCR 1350 AM in Wolverhampton during 2002. I presented a documentary 'special' on the music of Johnny Thunders - from his New York Dolls period onwards through 'The Heartbreakers' and then his solo career. Dave's contribution to the show was invaluable.

For me personally to get to work with Dave was a thrill and a dream come true. As a young teenage enthusiastic punk/new wave drummer in the late 70's - I was knocked out by The Pistols and Johnny Thunders was a massive influence on me. To meet and work with Dave who had been in such close contact with these guys during the 'punk period' was priceless.

In an industry that is full of flaky / fair weather egotistical toss pots - Dave was a beacon of Karma. May his pipe never go out.

The deepest sympathies of myself and Gary Lammin (who had recorded quite regularly with Dave over the past few years) go out to Dave's lovely wife Cathy.

The Dalaman is gone but will not be forgotten

Gary O'Dea.
